Young Drivers Car Insurance!!!?

Young Drivers Car Insurance!!!?

Postby garnoc » Mon Apr 04, 2011 3:42 pm

I've been shopping around for car insurance and for a car on my own I cant get it below £4,000 so to get this lower I was going to add my dad as the main driver and put me as an additional driver which got it down to £1,600, that was the plan until my mum told me it was illegal and called 'fronting' so that's out the window but then I was told when I buy my car to get my dad to buy it in his name, and then do the whole main driver and additional driver thing and it should be okay, is this true?

If not can someone please give me some advice on how to get cheap car insurance, I'm going to be 18, it will be my first car and anything below a 1.4 engine size.

Thanks

If you search this site you'll see that this question has been asked before... it doesn't work this way as everyone's conditions are different.

Try getting a quote online or from a local broker. I am paying less than ½ of what I was paying before.

your mum is correct you cannot buy a car in your name and have dad as main driver and you named driver, but he can buy the car be main insurer and you as named driver, the best car to buy is either: citroen c1, toyota aygo, peugeot 107, these are all the same model but with slightly different looks, they only have 1 litre engine, emmisions are low, road tax £20 per year, that would be cheapest car to insure, best thing is to ring insurance company and ask what is cheapest way.

Young Drivers Car Insurance!!!?

I was reading in the newspaper the other day that some insurers, such as Co-operative, Coverbox and Adrian Flux offer a young driver policy. Basically, they put a device in your car that monitors your driving. It looks at things like your speed, the amount of driving you do, if you do any night driving etc. It feeds it back to your insurer and they calculate your premiums based on how you personally drive, rather than how all under 25's drive, so if you are a careful driver, it might be worth having a look at that.

It makes no difference who owns the car - what matters is who is the main driver. If your Dad owns the car and puts himself as the main driver when, actually, it's you, that's fronting.

Your Mum is right. Sorry.

I'd say get your dad to buy the car in his name and name you as a second driver, I did this, Do it for a few year and get yourself some no claims, and then go solo, Hope this helps, :)

No it will not work either way, you have to be the main driver.

From what I have seen £2500 seems to be the minimum for new Yaounde drivers.

Fronting is illegal.

If your Dad buys it you aren't the main driver so are not eligible for no claims bonus!
If you crash it the insurance company are liable to check out who really was the main driver and if they catch you out (for example finding you Dad is insured on another bigger/newer/bigger engined car) they rescind your insurance for telling lies! You were then not insured when you crashed and the police throw the book at you for no insurance and crush the car - if there is anything left of it!

Statistically if you are male you are very liable to wrap it round a tree or similar - hence high premiums! Whatever you do drive SLOWLY and carefully and look far ahead and don't take mates/girls out in it to show off!

Use several comparison websites and check rates for older small engine cars of say 1litre - nothing sporty! Buy what car gives you best insurance rate = not what you really want!

A friend of ours lost his best mate when he lost control driving too fast and misjudged a corner showing off to the girl friend. The Victorian railway arch he hit doesn't even have a scratch on it but both of them were killed! They were 1 mile from home!
