Who Would Be Responsible For The Funeral Expenses?

Postby yehoash » Tue Sep 12, 2017 8:56 pm

My parents have their estate set up so their life insurance will cover their funeral expenses. They also have a life insurance policy on my brother and I to bury us, even though we are married. No, my parents are not wealthy. They are middle class Americans who have just been fiscally smart over the years.

I would say in the situation with no life insurance and no funding coming from the deceased, it would fall upon the children to handle laying their parents to rest.

Probably the grown children would take the brunt of the expenses and it would be nice if the other family members helped with the costs as well. Funerals aren't cheap!

usually at least in my family the children would be responsible with the HELP of other family members. so it depends on the flow of money and who had what and how much they have...

no one is responsible.

if no one volunteers, then the body stays in the morgue

legally, the estate of the deceased is responsible.

in practical terms, the funeral homes contracts [did you ever read one?] hold the person who makes the arrangements responsible in the event the estate doesn't or can't pay in full.

that usually means the adult who makes the arrangements gets the bill.
If that's the grown children, fine.
If it's a well-to-do sibling, fine.
Even Uncle Money Bags is good.
