Life in Detroit? That's the first time i have heard that. Life in Detroit is "Pure Dead" no one has respect for each other, and since nobody in Detroit has no time to actually answer this because they're to busy killing each other, i will do it... Detroit's life is dead, people there are dead, and no one has respect.

I have lived in the actual city of Detroit my entire life (not a suburb) and yeah...it's pretty much a sh*thole for the most part. Where I live on the Northwest side is not that bad compared to the rest of the city in terms of crime, but I still wouldn't go walking around alone at night. The safest part of Detroit is probably the Downtown area as that's where most of the police are, but it's also overrun with bums that will beg you constantly especially if you are white and the wings/lions/tigers are playing...the rest of Detroit the police are mythical beings that some people have claimed to see once or twice a year. Since you can't count on the police to help you, it's all about street justice.

People in detroit take signs of disrespect very seriously. The littlest thing that can be considered disrespectful can get you in deep sh*t with somebody.

Again downtown and wayne state areas are probably the safest places to be because they usually have a heavy police presence, especially near concert and sport venues. If you wander too far from these locations you are asking for trouble.

Besides downtown and wayne state NO part of the city is safe to walk at night. NEVER drive anywhere in the city at night if you do not know exactly where you are going and how to get there.

You can buy drugs right at the pump in broad daylight at some gas stations.

All of the east side, brightmoor, and parts of the southwest side (Delray) are places you don't really want to be at any time of the day. Especially the east side.

I don't actually work or go to any stores within the city, I always drive to the Livonia/Redford/Farmington areas for that.

Agreed with what was said if you drive about 30-40 minutes from Detroit to somewhere like the Brighton/Howell area it will seem like a completely different planet and it's a very nice area.

I lived in Detroit for college for a bit.

It wasn't too bad, but it's definitely not that great. I would not want to live there again.

Detroit is like a patchwork quilt of bad (as in super unsafe, ghetto like) and average places.

The place I lived had two colleges, and was near the DIA, the library, many good places to eat, and had the basic necessities within walking distance (although on most occasions you'd have to walk with a group just to be on the safer side).
It's basically the safest area in Detroit-but even then I heard of many students' things getting stolen from cars, being mugged-although it only happened about 2 or 3 times in a year in my school. It's definitely not that fun to live. You start feeling like you're trapped within the limits of the safety zone, and you want to get out. Even though there were many places within walking distance, everything felt so run down and slightly low-quality.
Don't get me wrong, there are many hidden gems in Detroit, but it's not enough to keep you wanting to live there. You also start craving to see nature, since most of Detroit is gray buildings. There's definitely a lack of greenery.

I currently live outside of it and prefer it. I would say that almost everybody does. Detroit may be a major city, but there's a reason why it's dying. There's no perks to living there.

Just driving 40-30 minutes away from Detroit, you'll enter into nicer cities. A lot cleaner, safer, with high standards of living, and more nature to enjoy.

It depends where you live, the city itself is a shithole but its getting better, downtown can be really fun but the average apartment there will run you a few grand a month (but they are nice apartments) and all the concerts and sports go on there, all the suburbs have their own culture and are really hit and miss because some of them have a lot of jobs but housing can be costly others are really cheep to live but your going to drive an hour to get to work...its like any big city really

come on now that's not right for any of you saying that the City is a no no no and the Burbs are the go go go -- anywhere in the US Burbs are so much more considered the safest which of course is due to the Wealth.

In the city, it depends on where you are. There's millionaires, and people who are completely cracked out on the same block. But, it's coming back and there's neighborhoods that you would never expect to still be in Detroit.

The suburbs, really good actually. There's lots of stuff to do, and its safe. Almost too... There's a lot of people, and rush hour is horrendous driving around.

It's more enjoyable in the suburbs than in the city itself, especially if you're gainfully employed.
There's a reason why the city was once considered the murder capitol of the world.
