What Does The Term "adult" Mean To You?

Postby Faer » Mon Oct 09, 2017 12:35 pm

I am tired of people telling me how immature I am because of my age - 17.

I am a high school senior. I keep my grades on the AB Honor Roll (although they are all A's as of right now). I am a captain in my high school's marching band. I live with my dad, and I do a majority of the house and yard work while he is at work. I also cook for myself and drive myself where I need to go. I make my own car and insurance payments. I am putting money back in a savings account. I do not get in trouble at school and I am respectful of my elders, thanks to my parents' teachings. I do not smoke, drink, or do drugs. I've been with a great guy [who also stays away from illegal substances] for almost a year now. He and I have never broken up - none of that on and off stuff for us - and are still going strong. We are aware that it takes more than love to make a relationship work, and we fight for it every day. I am aware that I have a ways to go before I am fully mature and ready to be completely on my own, but I find that I have a higher level of maturity than a lot of kids my age, who still complain every day about their parents, think failing grades is a reason to brag, drink every weekend, and giggle because the charts given out in Anatomy have penises.

To me, the term adult means:

-Taking school/ work seriously.

-Knowing how and when to conduct oneself.

-Paying bills.

-Being able to take care of oneself (knowing how to clean and cook).

-Having respect and common sense for others, especially parents.

-Staying away from the obvious trouble (underage possession/ use of illegal substances, etc).

Do you believe people can accurately judge others' maturity level on their numeric age, 100% of the time? What does the term "adult" mean to you? I want opinions.

I would say 25 and older. I'm 21 and while I don't feel like a kid, I wouldn't say I'm an adult either.

Adult refers to persons who have reached the legal age of majority as declared by law.

At 17, you would be considered a young adult.

"Shallow" basically means that you judge people on their appearance rather than their personality and feelings. Example: Bob: "I'm only friends with her because she's hot." John: "You're so shallow."

Anyone 21 years old and older.

However, you can be a mature person at 18 and an immature person at 35.
