I was stopped by police for no having a valid insurance?

Bottom line is it's the driver's responsibility to ensure the car is kept legal.

"I didn't know", "I never got the letter" and "ah, but...." aren't excuses unfortunately. One of these times you just need to learn a lesson, unfortunately.

You can only be 100% sure that your Insurance Company has insured you when you receive either a Cover Note or Insurance Certificate.
If you did not receive either of those documents, then you weren't insured.

As a ex tow truck driver I have seen/heard it all before when the police called us out to tow yet another uninsured car to the pound.

Sometimes life is not fair- and this is one of those times. You just have to learn from it.

Insurance is a pain in the backside since they make these price comparison sites.

Insurers quote you the cheapest price, take your money, then hold you hostage for more information to find an excuse to charge you more. If you refuse to pay they charge you a fee to exit. Either you have a contract or you don't! As far as I'm concerned many are breaking contract law and changing the items you select on a policy and drag you out over the 14 day cooling off period by asking for photos of the car, driving license and other stuff. I'm currently dealing with an insurer that doesn't send out any paper work so I have no paper copy of my insurance certificate. It's crazy!

Someone needs to sort them out. If you feel hard done by you're supposed to contact http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/ with your complaint.
