Should I Go Through Insurance?

Postby Vasilios » Sat Oct 07, 2017 3:10 pm

Hi,

Recently, I parked my car at my apartment parking complex and someone had scraped my rear bumper.
I'd like to get it fixed...but I'm not sure if I should go through my insurance or not.

I have a 250 deductible for "uninsured damage" which I think applies here under my policy.

Will the rates go up if I go through my insurance company for stuff like this? Because if so, I'll just shell it out of my own pocket.
I'm not sure which way to go here.
Thanks for helping me out.

Actually it will be covered under your Collision coverage, and that's the deductible that will apply.
Uninsured is for when the other vehicle is identified but has no insurance.

No, it won't put your rates up.
Only at-fault accidents do that, and being hit while parked is not considered an at-fault accident.
Different story if you did the hitting and running, but that's not the case here.

Check out your Collision deductible (and if you don't have Collision then your deductible is whatever the damage is), and go from there.
You might also ask the body shop how much the repairs would cost if you paid for it yourself instead of billing it to the insurer.
It's absolutely amazing how often body shops can re-work the numbers when an insurance company isn't footing the bill.
