My nephew (age 19) and his girlfriend (age 21) had a baby in July. Girlfriend has shaken baby syndrome and has some cognitive deficits. My nephew has ADHD and poor impulse control, and neither has health insurance for treatment of their conditions.
They are currently homeless and jobless. My sibling who is the grandparent is doing the best to keep my nephew, the baby, and mother in my sibling's home to keep them from being homeless. My sibling has spoken to me about wanting to get guardianship of the child until the parents can get back on their feet, but is really concerned about their ability to care for a baby. My sibling would adopt this child to protect them from neglectful parenting, but is much older than me and has raised three kids. My sibling had children young, and now all the children are in their teens or older. A newborn would take a long time to raise.
Should I offer to adopt? I am 30 years old and I am not married but I have a secure boyfriend. I have no children of my own but want to soon. Financially, I would need help from the State, but I have a bachelor's degree and can work full time if I could find childcare. I want to make sure this child has a good life, and I am at the point in my life where I am ready to raise children.
What do you think?
