Relocating and living cost in UK?

Postby abban77 » Mon Apr 16, 2012 7:38 pm

hi I have an offer to relocate to UK. Walsall located in west midlands. I am being offered 39000 GBP a year (Pre tax). Company is going to deduct tax / health insurance / retirement contribution from this. I want to under stand if this is a good package to accept the offer.

I am single as of now but soon will be married and my typical requirement would be

1. 1 bedroom house
2. eating / other utility expenses
3. owning a car / driving out specially during weekends
4. clubbing during weekends.

If you can give me more or less an idea about what are the costs for the above said expenses and if 39000 is a good package to accept will be really helpful. Thanks.

That is an excellent salary... for a middle manager, branch manager, Professional... and well above the average for the UK. Yes it would easily provide all you are asking about. Your deductions will be about 25%-30% Walsall and surrounding area is reasonably cheap for housing and there are some nice villages. If you want nightlife and urban living Birmingham has it all and some nice designer apartments too. Cars can be expensive and if you are offered a company car (even if you have to pay towards it) I would go for it. Another option is to go for an older classic... which should depreciate less and be cheaper to run.

Personal Allowance £8,105 which is money earned before you are taxed on it

Basic rate: 20% £0-£34,370 which isthe tax you pay up to this amount after this amount you pay 40% tax...so your salary you would also need to pay, national insurance and health insurance and retirement contribution ( if this is a private pension plan....then get it checked out first as you can often get better fr the same money, depaends if your company is contributing as well) so -40% approx of £39k

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?searchType=RENT&locationIdentifier=REGION^1392&insId=1&radius=0.0&displayPropertyType=&minBedrooms=1&maxBedrooms=2&minPrice=&maxPrice=&maxDaysSinceAdded=&retirement=&sortByPriceDescending=&_includeLetAgreed=on&primaryDisplayPropertyType=&secondaryDisplayPropertyType=&oldDisplayPropertyType=&oldPrimaryDisplayPropertyType=&letType=&letFurnishType=&houseFlatShare=false

The average salary in Walsall would be £25k-£30k and they would be owning a house and providing for a family, running a car, so unless you have very expensive tastes in shopping and only eat at the best restaurants at £150 a meal you will live very well on this amount.

£39000 is a good salary before tax.
Per month and after tax/NI has been deducted, you'll have around £2500 to live off per month, I think that's plenty if there will only be 2 adults.

1. Personally I'd live on the outskirts of Walsall. A 2 bed flat will cost you around £500 per month:
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-22181301.html
Or you can live closer in the centre for around £400 for a 2 bed terrace:
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/property-21775194.html
You can browse that site properly for yourself and see what you'd rather go for, house in the centre or flat (or more expensive house) in the more rural areas.

2. For the 2 of you, you shouldn't need to spend anymore than £70 per week on a supermarket shop, so £280 per month.
When me & my hubby have a take away, we spend around £5 on each meal, so £10 and only have one of those a month.
Restaurants vary, you can find nice ones which will do 2 three course meals for £20 (or similar), other restaurants will be £20 just for a main and drink.

Bills like electric and gas depend on how much you use, shouldn't be anymore than £100 a month for both though, including water in that figure too actually, unless you always leave electrics plugged in or on, then expect your bill to sky rocket!

3. You will find a decent car for around £2000 or you can spend more on a newer one if you so wish.
Insurance will vary massively depending on your age, previous experiences, any crashes or claims, etc. You can get your own quotes on comparison websites like gocompare.co.uk.
Tax will vary depending on vehicle, you can check that on parkers.co.uk.

4. Depends where you go and how much you drink, I'd manage on £10 but I don't drink much, some of my friends can easily spend £80-£100 on a night out.

Relocating and living cost in UK?

Well living up north will be cheaper than down south,
eating out is a lot cheaper these days, especially at your local pubs.
owning and driving a car in the UK has got to be the most expensive thing ever, with fuel climbing in price every month, a tank of fuel could cost as much as £90.00,and the insurance is just as expensive.
Clubbing will really eat away at your wallet.
Most families in the UK,rely on both incomes to pay their way,,one is not enough.
£39,000 is a good figure, any higher, you would be in a higher tax band..
You just have to be realistic when it comes to socalising
