If Obamacare goes into effect, what will happen if you lose your job and are unemployed for several months?

Or for a year or longer? What if you can't afford to pay for health insurance on a monthly basis in that type of situation? Will you get fined/thrown in jail?

What I noticed about government programs that scares me is how merciless they can be and how easy it is to fall between the cracks.

Did you know getting out of paying a student loan is harder than getting out of any other debt-even child support or taxes?

If you can work a minimum wage job, you will owe student loan debt the rest of your unnatural life. It might never be paid off-even 50 years later.

So with Obama Care, don't be surprised to see yourself get expected to hold insurance you can't afford while it's proponents use the argument that "you can't afford not to have it". At least you can sell your car and walk or bike to work if you can't afford car insurance. The government bureaucracy will determine if IT thinks you are trying enough to buy it and could ruin your life if you can't prove you can't. Have you ever tried to prove something to the government-eg the IRS? Their standards of "able to pay" are so tight and they ignore everyone else you owe as if they were the only creditor.

Considering you would then most likely be eligible for your state's Medically Indigent program I strongly doubt it.

Edit: It is minimum medical insurance provided by states for their very poor and homeless populations and administered through the county. When you go to a county health clinic the paperwork you fill out determines your eligibility for that program. If you are eligible, you pay anywhere from nothing to a small "share of cost" depending on your income level. If you are not eligible, you pay the standard rate for you care. Since you can make 200% of the federal poverty level and be eligible, unemployed people who can't afford to maintain their insurance through COBRA are almost always eligible for their state's Medically Indigent Service Plan. I work with the very poor and the homeless, so I'm very familiar with this program and how it is administered in California in Lake, Mendocino, Yuba, Sacramento, Placer and El Dorado counties. I fill out the paperwork for these programs for some of the less "with it" poor folks/homeless folks all the time.

The 2014 insurance exchange plan will offer everyone the chance to buy health insurance whether you have a job or you are a student or dont have employer health plan. When you file your tax return you get a tax credit which is a subsidy toward the cost of the insurance for people with under $88K annual income.

If you dont have any insurance and have no hardship or religious exemption, you start paying a fine which increases over time. You create a tax liability if you dont buy insurance but why wouldn't you get insurance? We all need it. That will bring down the cost of insurance for everyone and save the government tons of money which goes to pay Medicaid now for uninsured patients.

In the Federal Appeals court case challenging the constitutionality of obamacare

The Obama administration lawyer, when ask about the government mandating people by health insurance from corporations

Actually said, the government is not mandating any such thing, if people do not want to buy health insurance, than they can just make less money and the government will buy it for them.

IE: if you do not want the government to force you to buy something from a corporation, then make yourself poor enough and the government will give it to you free.

You'd be given a subsidy to pay for health insurance through your state's insurance exchange.
