How do you find out if you have health insurance?

Postby keri » Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:36 pm

I may or may not have BlueCross BlueShield.
I need to have surgery done. It's for a personal, feminine issue. My father abandoned me when I was young. I think he was required to carry insurance on me until I turned 18 (I'm 20 now) When I found out I needed this surgery I tried calling him but he wouldn't come to the phone (he's refused to speak to me since I was 8) & his mother was very snotty to me and said she didn't know. Big help.
I tried calling BCBS but couldn't get through. Is there some other way to find out? Maybe online? Thanks.

No there is NO insurance in your name otherwise you would have received a Member card from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Suggest you sign up for some now

You've never received an insurance card?
Could you ask your mom if she has this card?
If he won't even answer the phone - chances are he is not paying extra for your health insurance. Go talk to your mom

EDIT: Were you an official foster child to your grandmother? Did she get paid by the state for taking care of you? If so, you probably had some sort of state medical coverage. Do you have a social worker? She's the one you should ask about this. It's entirely possible, though, that you had insurance until you turned 18 and don't have it any more. Someone should have explained all this to you when you reached age 18.

If you are 18 your parents are no longer responsible. Too bad you cant ask Dad to get on his policy. Who told you you need surgery? Tell them you have no insurance and see how they can help you.

I am sure you do not have insurance.

If he is not even willing to come to the phone for you (which costs him nothing), then he would not be willing to pay thousands of dollars to keep you on the insurance for two years longer than he was required to keep you on it.

However, if you really want to check, I suppose you could write BCBS a letter and send it by U.S. mail.

If you're not in contact with your dad, he doesn't have insurance coverage on you.

Since you're an adult, if you don't pay for it yourself, or if you didn't apply for welfare health insurance yourself, or if you don't have it through your job, then you don't have any health insurance.
