How Do You Become An Independent Insurance Agent?

1. Get an insurance license from the state government.
(Make sure to get a "life and health" license, not a "property and casualty" license, which is for a different type of insurance.)

2. Find a company willing to let you sell their policies.

3. Find clients.

Each state has an Insurance Department, usually located in the state capitol. They review rates, test agents, issue licenses and govern all matters related to insurance. Contact them for information.

Well, first you pass a test that lets you sell insurance.
Then, you find an insurance company willing to let you sell their product.
With no experience, the second part can be kinda tough.

So, get your license now (go to your state insurance department website for study materials and testing information), and go work for ANOTHER agent for a few years, so that when these provision start kicking in, you have the experience and contacts to get your OWN appointments.
