in california you have to make 2 or 3 times your income - so saving money isn't going to help you. It's about how much you make so that you're able to pay your rent plus take care of yourself.
secondly, always remember that there is a DEPOSIT! deposits vary but consider having a deposit that's about $500+.
$5,000 is way too low.

well it depends on what state you live in and what area. Ok so your rent would be $800 a month well you'd need a deposit, your first month's rent, the current rent, and some places ask for the last month's rent. Then you need a deposit on the electric. So right there that's over $2500.

Everyone struggles by not knowing what they need, you're fortunate you have us to ask.
You'd need things like pots and pans, dish towels, a microwave, dishes (different sizes) and cups, silverware, glasses, maybe a baking dish (like for making a flat cake in), mits, tongs, hand mixer, some containers for leftovers. In the bathroom you'd need toiletries of course plus towels, washclothes if you use those, shower curtain and backing curtain, you might want a pole to put over the tub to hang clothes to drip dry them, hand mirror, hair dryer, some people like rugs in the bathroom. Living room you might need a futon (doubles as a bed), a chair, tv, computer, radio, whatever you like, a lamp, few bulbs, cellphone or wall phone, table to put tv on, blankets, sheets, pillow and pillow cases......so depends on how you live.
