How Does My Friend Get Health Insurance?

Postby Frank » Mon Sep 11, 2017 11:15 pm

He was on medicaid, but turned 19 recently, so the medicaid expired. His parents were uninsured, so he can't just stay on his parent's health insurance until he's 26. He wants to find very cheap health insurance while he's at college, because his college health care plan is very "expensive". Also, the college mandates that everyone has to have health insurance. Where could he find it?

He can find it through a local broker or agent.
He can find it at ehealthinsurance.com or another website.

He gets it by applying for it, and paying whatever it costs where he lives.
He does not get it by deciding how cheap he wants it.

Since he no longer qualifies for welfare, I'd guess he's going to have to decide if he can work full time while going to college, to afford the insurance that he wants.
Or, he won't be able to afford the luxury of being voluntarily employed, while in college.

It's not going to be CHEAPER than that school plan, unless he can get it through an employer.

Call the Blue Cross Blue Shield in his area and they will give him a free quote.

I'm 36 healthy non-smoking female. I have two children daughter age 7 and son age 2.
We pay for private insurance and it is $400 a month for the 3 of us. I don't think that is so bad.

The new health care exchanges does not become effective until Jan 2014.
He will have to get private insurance until then. They have not yet listed prices for any policy.
Private insurance is not cheap either.
I used a site called ICAN.
They have several choices, though they are not cheap & not full coverage.
The heath plan offered by his college may be his best choice, odds are it will still be cheaper then anything else he can find.

If he lives in a large metro area.
Check the telephone book for a Health Insurance Broker.
They can offer rates from different companies, but they don't exist in all areas.

ICAN isn't health insurance and won't satisfy your college mandate. Have him call an agent the works with all of the major plans in his area. The agent can find the best plan for his situation and budget. However, tell him not to be surprised if the college insurance was the cheapest available. Most college plans are very limited in benefits and the low premium reflects that fact.

A) ICAN isn't health insurance.

B) Nobody owns or advertises in a telephone book anymore (unless they're marketing to senior citizens) -- use the Internet.

C) Have him call a health insurance broker and buy a plan.
