How can I survive on my own as a full time college student?

Postby edmyg » Wed Dec 28, 2011 12:59 am

I am currently a part time package handler at UPS; I work 3rd shift. I also signed up to take 15 credit hours for the spring semester. I am ready to be on my own and need advice on what I need to do. I do not want to make reckless decisions. I thought about getting a second job because I only make $150.00 a week at UPS. My car insurance costs 200 dollars a month; this is including the discounts. I am 20 years old and had a minor accident in the school parking lot so that is why my insurance is expensive. I need to build up my credit and budget my money. I have Chase checking and savings account. I am thinking about getting a credit card with them as well. I just need ideas on how I should go about budgeting my money, if I should look for different insurance companies, and if I should go to school part time? If I go to school full time I will be done with the bachelors program in fall 2014. I will have health, dental, vision insurance provided to me in June from UPS. I think I provided enough information! Please let me know what I should do ASAP!

How can I survive on my own as a full time college student?

I'm a college graduate and lived at home while earning my 2 BA's. I would had loved to live on campus, but I just thought it was a waste living only but 20 min. away from school. Hmm...there is a high importance of education especially since the job market is super competitive right now with the economy. Then again money makes the world go round; just when your doing both school and work it's hard to keep the focus on priorities.

Options:
-sign up for FAFSA (federal aid money known as financial aid)
-apply for grants and scholarships (the money is used however you want. Whereas some have restrictions if you live on campus that is all school oriented.
-work on campus
-during school breaks ask for more hours
-clip coupons for groceries to bargain save
-instead of living on your own rent a room or find a roommate. Doesn't the university have apartments to rent out to students? Where I went they started at $400 and up.
-save cans and bottles
-only drive your car unless you need to otherwise walk or take the bus to save money
-work a second job on the weekends only

Credit cards are good to build credit, but can also be the devil. So tempting to want to slide it when you have no money and want materialistic items and want to go out of friends.
