Hot Or Cold Water For A Goldfish?

Postby Stratford » Wed Oct 04, 2017 9:18 am

The correct temperature for goldfish really depends upon whether you intend to breed your fish.

If you intend to breed your goldfish then, rather than maintaining a steady temperature all year round, you should try to replicate the temperature changes that occur in nature. Goldfish spawn in the spring, when water temperatures rise after the cold winter. Therefore, to encourage your goldfish to lay eggs, you should lower the temperature of your tank in the winter months to between 10°C/50°F and 12°C/54°F. Then, when you want to induce breeding, gradually raise the temperature of the water to between 20°C/68°F and 23°C/74°F.

But since this is for a science fair, keep the water cold, but if you still want to breed your fish my comment will sure help.

I keep my comet goldfish at 65 and he likes it. Gold fish are cold water fish so I wouldn't recommend going about 75 with your water if you would like to keep goldfish. I've also heard fancy goldfish prefer warmer water, not sure why though.

the 1st rule of owning a goldfish is be very careful while changing the water if the water is much different from the old water than it shock the goldfish by being to hot or to cold. try to make the water room temp.
