Home insurance claim for Kitchen fire. Should installation be included with the claim?

Postby eston » Wed Apr 18, 2012 9:36 am

We had a kitchen fire in our home a few months back. They are getting into the installation of everything but going over the claim, it covers items to be removed, and covers materials (minimally) but it doesn't cover for anything to be replaced. So all the installation is being taken out of pocket and out of our materials budget. Does this sound right? I thought if its covered to be removed they'd cover for it to be put back.

Thanks for any help in advance.

The adjuster's estimate should include both labor and material for all removal, disposal, and installation of the items damaged. I would suggest going over the estimate with the adjuster to make sure; computerized estimates can sometimes be confusing.

The insurance should cover everything needed to you back to as-was condition. If you are not satisfied contact the head office of the insurance company you are dealing with. Many use contract appraisers and many are lousy and seek brownie points for getting the company off cheap. This though does make for bad PR for the company.
If nothing else works contact your state's Attorney General's office consumer affairs or the officeof the insurance commission. The former is more active on consumer's behalf usually. A phone call or two can likely get you a better resolution.

It depends on the type of policy you have.

A standard HO3 policy, covers debris removal, and REPLACEMENT of the items including installation.

Some other policy types, a market value or functional replacement value, might not be giving you enough to cover stuff.

So, it's impossible to answer, not knowing what policy form you have.
