Help Me With Finding The Right First Car?

Postby Garry » Thu Oct 05, 2017 2:10 pm

Hi =)

I know this is kinda long winded, but please read, and bear with me

I'm looking for a first car that will last for some years, can take a lot of wear and tear, and is reliable.
Specifically, I want a mid-sized SUV.
Sedans and Small trucks (as well as bigger SUVs such as Ford Expeditions, Suburbans, Tahoes, etc.) are OUT OF THE QUESTION.

I live in southern California, but i do a lot of "local" travel, so I want something that can handle it all.
Whether I'm in the mountains with snow, ice, slush, etc., or out in the desert in soft sand or dirt washes/riverbeds, or just offroading in general, I don't want to hesitate when I'm in my car.
Also, I go to the beach at least 2 or 3 times a week, so i also want an SUV that i can throw surfboards/beach gear into or onto.

The majority of the driving I'll be doing though is city driving (eg school, sports, errands, whatever) so I don't necessarily want like a tank...

As an aside, I have a younger brother, and I'll have to chauffer him and his buddies around from time to time, so my car also has to be fairly safe.

CARS THAT HAVE MY ATTENTION:

1) Ford Explorer

2) Jeep Grand Cherokee

(The above two are my favorites...)

3) Toyota 4Runner

4) maybe a toyota highlander (haven't checked it out too much tho)

NECESSARY FEATURES:

1) 4x4 BUT can switch between 2x4 and 4x4 as needed (need 2x4 for city driving/better gas mileage)

2) Tow Package (we have a boat and trailer, tho trailer is too big for an SUV)

3) Leather Upholstery (I'm a guy, just gonna wipe seats off every once in a while, so no fuzzy/fabricky stuff)

4) Automatic Tranny

5) Seats at least 5 people, but i dont need 3rd row seating

PRICE RANGE: No more than 11 grand

Like I said above, I especially like the Ford Explorers (but I know they've had rollover issues and transmission failures after 65k miles or so) and the Jeep Grand Cherokees (but will raise my already outrageous insurance because it is considered a luxury car???)

And if you've read through all that stuff up there ^^ then i commend you.

Any and all comments, suggestions, or help very much appreciated!!

I?d suggest a used Chevrolet Equinox. It gives you the safety and size of a crossover vehicle, while also getting good gas mileage. Good luck with your search!

Thanks,

My first impression as your story starts out is that you should look at a Subaru Outback.
They have some great awd 5 passenger vehicles that won't cost you an arm and a leg to buy and operate.
Then I read that you will want this to tow as well. If your boat is just ski boat, again a Subaru wagon or sedan could handle it well, but if you have heavier needs, then that pushes into a truck or beefier suv.
The two that you selected as your favorites are notoriously bad vehicles.
The Ford has serious transmission issues and the Jeep has brake and electrical issues.
I would suggest you review Edmonds.com for some more info other than their appearance.
Nissan has some great SUVs that are tow capable, as does Honda.
I have owned a Pathfinder for 12 years and it will tow anything.
The newer Pathfinders have much better tow capacities than mine does too.
I think an Explorer would be a mistake.
Jeeps have great engines, both the V8 and the I6 versions.
The strange thing is that the I6 4 ltr Jeep has more torque than their V8.
I am a fan of both motors though.
Get a warranty and make sure its a good one.
