Do I have to pay taxes on Short Term Disability?

Postby rafal62 » Sun Nov 18, 2012 11:06 pm

I have worked for about 15 years for various companies and have been paying into SDI.
I was put on Short Term Disability this year and taxes were never taken out of my disability payments.
I received a statement of how much is in my disability bank/allotment. Is it taxable when I do my taxes in 2013? How would I claim it?

SDI State Disability Insurance. Good Luck.
Is SDI taxable? Disability Insurance (DI) vs. Paid Family Leave (PFL)?
Disability Insurance (DI) benefits are not taxable except when considered to be a substitute for unemployment compensation when paid to an individual who is ineligible for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits solely because of the disability. Only in this instance, where DI benefits are received in lieu of UI benefits, will the EDD provide the claimant with a 1099G form showing amounts paid which are reportable (no more than the original UI maximum) and forward a copy of the 1099G to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Good Luck to you.

some states incur the SDI on the employee, some states do not
if you paid into the system it is not taxable income to you
you may receive a statement but it if is not a 1099 or a W-2 it will not be reported as income

The part you paid for, no. If your employer paid for it, yes - It'll be on your W-2.
