A good first car for a male?

A good first car for a male?

Postby cace » Wed Sep 07, 2011 4:36 am

Hi,

Im looking for a good first car for an 18 year old male. I want to spend up to £5,000 - £6,000 on the car. I would prefer petrol with a 1.3 - 1.6L engine. The insurance should be no more than £2,000 however I can always go under my dads name to reduce the price if it's a larger price tag.

Currently I have been offered my dads Fiesta Zetec S 1.6 and my mum's Mini One 1.6 but I do not want them. Thanks.

personally if you want a small motor car get a honda they will run forever 2nd it would probably be in your parents best interest to undergo your own insurance. if you would get into an accident that person can come back sue you and also your parents being that your under their insurance

321 you are back in the room -good afternoon,

Time you were brought kicking and screaming into the real world for teen drivers.

UNDER DADS NAME - its fraud, its a criminal act called "Fronting". When caught at best you will not have a claim honoured in the event of an accident, to the other extreme you and Dad end up in jail for a spell - heres a BBC news report to tell you all about it http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/10241769

The REAL cost - even if you do attempt the fraud above the insurers now base the premium on the highest risk driver because they know that Dads and Mums insuring a car, a second car thus having no No Claims Bonus to put to it are telling lies about who the real main driver is.

Here's what will happen - At best you can bank on insurance being £3000 and maybe more for a 1.0 litre Corsa or similar. At least you will get a good one for the money you have to spend.

Forget 1.6, forget sporty or modified for the next 7 or 8 years

From personal experience a wolkswagen polo is a great first car, reason's why
1 They hold their value much better then other car's
2 you wont pay much car insurance.1.2 1.4 and 1.6 their are other series i think.
3 the Volkswagen Polo Mark IV (9N) and Mark IVF (9N3) is my best looking polo
4 Performance is brilliant never had a big problem.
Good luck and enjoy.

What you want, and what you need are two different thing.
First you don't need such an expensive car as the insurance will go up. Under £1,000, is better.
Second, the smaller the engine the better. Look at a small Japanese car, Suzuki Swifts are cheap and quite good.
Third, insurance under £2,000? Good luck.

"The insurance should be no more than £2,000..."
Well, that's not going to happen, no matter what car you have.
The AVERAGE cost of insurance for a 18 year old, with a basic 1.0 litre car, is £4,000 a year. And bigger engines cost more to insure.

"...however I can always go under my dads name..."
Not legally you can't.

You really need to do some detailed research into the cost of running a car - you will be in for a very nasty surprise.
