Employer STDI and Paid Family Leave, California?

Employer STDI and Paid Family Leave, California?

Postby kosumi59 » Fri Jan 18, 2013 1:59 pm

I work in San Francisco, CA, but my employer is headquartered in Colorado.

They are offering my short term disability insurance through the company. My question is, can I take their STDI and then apply for Paid Family Leave of California? Or should I take California SDI and then PFLA?

Thanks for any help!

You are already eligible for both SDI and PFL. Your co-workers living in Colorado are not.

Take the private plan to supplement what you already have in place if you feel you will be using the benefit: you are planning to get pregnant. SDI replaces 55% of income, and lasts for 12 months.

Buy supplemental coverage if you want more than 55% replacement, or you what the benefit to last longer.

Does your company offer paid family leave? That has nothing to do with disability. You get the disability only when a doctor signs you off for an injury or illness. You are subject to the labor laws in California, not Colorado.
