The owner of a vehicle needs car insurance, because both the driver and owner could be held liable for an accident.

If you do not live in the same household, you are not considered a regular driver of the car, so you are typically covered by the owner's insurance as long as you have permission.

However, if you live in the same household, you are more likely to have regular use of the car, so you are not covered unless you are specifically listed on the policy. That is because if you are a possible regular driver, the cost of the policy should be based on risk, and someone who is young or a bad driver is considered a higher risk more likely to have an accident.

Check his insurance policy. It should say if other drivers are covered.
