If I Am Disabled And Collect Ssdi, Can I Still Collect My Veterans Disability Benefits?

Social Security Disability Insurance will not be reduced by Veteran's Administration benefits.
However, there is a distinction between VA benefits and military disability benefits so do not confuse the two.
While VA benefits will not effect your Social Security benefits, disability benefits from the military will reduce your Social Security disability benefits.

That is only for the regular Social Security benefits called SSDI or RSDI by some people.
This is technically called a Title 2 benefit and is based off of a person's work history.
The other type of benefit that a person can get is called a title 16 benefit or SSI (Supplemental Security Income.) SSI is not based off of work history - it is "needs" based, which means how much money you get is based off of how much money is coming into your household from other sources (including even other social security benefits) and any other benefit, irregardless of the source, can potentially effect your SSI benefit amount.

You also need to be aware that different agencies have different definitions for disability.
Just because you can meet the definition of one doesn't mean that you can meet the other.

Your best bet, if you are concerned is to contact the Claims Representative at your local office and provide them as much information as you can about the Veteran's benefits that you intend to file for and they can provide you with specific answers to how those benefits will effect your SSA benefits.
You can also go to the Social Security website for more information.
Go to the publications section and look for a benefit publication called "How Workers' Compensation And Other Disability Payments May Affect Your Benefits" (SSA-05-10018.)

If I Am Disabled And Collect Ssdi, Can I Still Collect My Veterans Disability Benefits?

I recently became unable to work, due to Injury's i got in the service. I was already getting Comp. pay from the VA. for those problems. Since i had paid into Social Security for years, I claimed SSDI. My VA Comp was raised as well because I was now unable to work due to service related problems. I was told the two were compelitly independent of the other. one does not reduce the other. I was given the pub. listed as my source.

SSDI has nothing to do with your veterans affairs.
Get it while you can.

You can collect both Veterans Comp and Social Security Disability because you paid Social Security while you were in.

Last year the Bush Regime tried to deprive the wouned of Social Security Disability but the DAV and other Veterans groups made so much noise they backed down

Just one more example of Republican "Support" for the Troops"

Yes you can.

After years and years, Bush finally made it where you VA disability no longer comes out of your military retirement or other disability pay first.

Yes you can collect both.
My husband is a retired disabled vet.
He served 30 years.
He gets VA retirement, his VA disability and his SSDI.
I don't see why you as a veteran should have any trouble getting your D/C.
Good luck and thanks for your service to our country.
