Is Depression Legally Considered A Disability In New Zealand?

It depends on the kind of depression you're talking about. If it's the typical kind, where a person is going through a rough time in their life, lost a job, a boyfriend/girlfriend, a relative died, etc, and they're feeling depressed (which is a normal feeling under such circumstances) then, no, it's not a disability. It's a sign that something is going wrong and that a person needs time to grieve. However, if it's ongoing and has no source (the person is depressed for no reason) or it's ongoing and extreme, to the point that it needs to be treated with medication, therapy and even hospitalization, yes, it's a disability. A chronically depressed person will go without the most basic of things: food, drink, showers, etc and will often neglect family, friends, pets, jobs, favorite hobbies, etc. It is a life-altering condition that makes a person unable to function. And, it can be deadly. Some people get so depressed that, without help, they will commit suicide. That form of depression is serious and it is real.

I would check out the definition of 'depression' through the NZ ACC website, as they would probably be paying out anyhow.

I'm a bit out of touch with NZ medical stuff, but I guess you may have to be diagnosed with bi-polar or something like that.
