Cost of living as a student University of Hawaii Manoa?

Postby wainwright » Wed Apr 25, 2012 12:43 pm

I was born in Hawaii, lived there half my life, visit there at least once a year, and have family there; so I know it is expensive. My question is, what should I expect my monthly bills be for living off campus in a rental/ rented room? If you have lived in this situation in Hawaii please tell me of your experience.

Based on my research, I figured I can get a room rented for around 700, food will be around 300-400, health insurance is around 200, and then there are all of the extra expenses. Do you think that it is possible to afford living there with a income of about 1700 a month?

Some added stuff. I will probably not live with my dad since he lives in Koolina and that's an hour away from school assuming there is no traffic. I will also be working for my dad so I already have a job lined up.

It sounds do-able to me. I do it for less in Hilo. My apartment is only $400 a month, off campus, but its really tiny and in the tsunami zone.

UH offers insurance, is that $200 a month? I thought it was cheaper than that.
