College student needs health insurance, please help?

I have two options.

I'm 21, so please don't recommend Medicaid. It was over at 21.

I can go with Aetna (for college students) -> but so expensive!
- And there's no dental attached. You pay 26 extra a month to be put on a dental discount plan.
- Yearly cost ($2,600ish) divided by 12 months = $234 monthly with a 15% copay.

Or I can pursue Blue Cross Blue Shield.
- Estimates I got from their website were under $80 a month.
- Dental insurance means adding $22.90 extra to that
- 20% copay and all preventive care is 100% covered

I don't make much money, I live on my own with 2 roomies, and sacrificed going out to movies/dinners with friends so I could pay for Mixed Martial Arts/Kickboxing (self-defense/health benefits). Now I have to consider health insurance.

There should be a different Medicaid program for adults. If you qualify, contact the medicaid office and get details. If your state is ...weird...and doesn't have any medicaid for adults, then you should look at each of those health plans and compare the details like deductible, out of pocket max, docs in your area that are covered, prescription plan.. Do you need insurance because you have health problems or just to be on the safe side? The plan you pick should be appropriate to your needs. If you just want it in case you need it, go with a higher deductible plan because they are cheaper. I'd skip the dental, again unless you have existing issues, because a 6 month cleaning doesn't cost that much.

Most colleges have a group plan that you can check into. If they have a medical school they often offer a plan using their teaching hospital.

As an undergrad and grad student my daughter used Wellpoint Blue Cross for $220 a month as she found the cheaper plans to be inadequate.

As a PhD student. her university has a medical school and hospital and they insure themselves for about $160 a month.

My point is that while an $80 a month plan looks good you have to really make sure they offer sufficient coverage. What is the maximum annual out of pocket cost? This should not be over $3,000.

if your parent(s) has insurance through their work, they might be able to add you on fairly cheap if you prove you're a full time student. that's how I'm insured.

Blue Cross Blue Shield appears to have the better offer.
