s/Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia and disability Advertisement Expert: Diane Chambers - 8/15/2006 Hi,

My sister was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia 4 months ago and present treatment has not been working well - chemo pill. Right before she found out, she was laid off from her job and presently does not have health insurance. I am trying to understand what options there are for assistance and abilty to get medical services. She lives in RI.

Thanks Mike

I am very sorry to hear about your sister.

I am not sure about the medical assistance programs as far as health insurance in RI, however, you can check with your health and welfare department regarding assistance through medicaid(this is what it is called in Florida) as far as insurance and contact social security to see if she qualifies for disability. I will tell you that usually SS may turn her down on her first attempt but that is only because of the time frames they have to review cases.  If she is receiving chemotherapy she may have a better chance of being accepted first time arround.  If not don't stop there appeal it. Also you said she was laid off from her job.  She may be entitled to unemployment.  Check with your dept of health and welfare and the dept of labor for the state of RI..

These benefits all vary from state to state.

Let me know if there is anything else I can assist you with.  The American cancer society may have some answers and assitance programs as well.   You can contact your local chapter.
