Can I travel to the USA, alone, while I'm still 17?

I'm 17 and was born in Australia, and I plan on travelling to the USA in January 2013 to visit some friends. What I really want to know is if I'll be able to travel by myself, and what exactly I will need for the trip, like medical insurance, etc. I'll be staying for around 3 weeks.

After you get the passport you can travel alone.

You will need a passport because they do t really let people from other country's here I think

As long as you will be staying with friends, that is fine. you are too young to get a hotel. you need your passport and you also need to apply for ESTA to come under the visa waiver program. It is quick and easy and you do it on-line. see site below.

If you are staying with friends. but you can not check into any hotel or hostel. You can not rent a car. You can not drink or buy alcohol.

US public transportation is pretty bad. It is good within a big city. But not from state to state or even within a state.
You can fly to take a bus or train by yourself at the age of 17.

January is a bad month to travel in any state that gets winter weather. Planes are often delayed

My kids have flown abroad under the age of 18, but we were either meeting them there or they were staying with a friend or relative. There are also teen tours. Your problem will be getting a hotel room if you are on your own. You can check into Youth Hostels as some of them will take you, but you have to know before you go.

travel insurance is not mandatory but it will be a good idea
