Can We Stop Blaming Guns For Mass Shootings And Address Our Crumbling Mental Health System Instead?

I'm gonna be honest and blunt with you: I don't think people like Adam Lanza are evil, and I actually feel sympathy for him. He was obviously in such a delusional world that he saw everyone as the enemy, even little innocent children. That doesn't excuse his horrific actions, but the point is, there are millions of people like him, who are suffering greatly, and don't have proper access to treatment. Many insurance plans have minimal or no mental health coverage. A lot of these people aren't bad people, and could be successful and productive members of society if given the right help; if not given help, some of them are driven so far into the depths of despair that they snap, and tragedies like Newtown happen. If your solution is to simply make mentally ill people the enemies, they're gonna fight back, with tragic consequences. Instead, we need to help them and get them treatment, and prevent them from reaching that point.

That what we should be doing all over the country and someone should be investigating who dropped the ball on the shooter in CT.

Okay I am ready to hear your solution. See that is the problem no one knows how to address the Mental Health problem. It is way easier for politicians to blame the gun, than to actually address the Mental health crisis in our nation. why because how do you handle it. If you force those that have mental health issues to take their medications, you are infringing on their rights. If you don't then they can flip out and become psycho killers and mass murderers. You also have to realize it is a mental health issue, so if you have one and take your medications the voices go away, why continue to take the medications. See this is the problem many view it this way they quit hearing the voices so they quit the meds. Then they hear the voices again and I can guarantee those voices never say take the Medication it will help you. I have worked with people with mental health issues so understand the problem, but can't say I have a solution. I do know it is not gun laws. In most cases they snap and use what is available, to coldly calculate as is done in most gun use mass murders I think there must be other underlying factors. If that is the case and you remove guns there are a lot more deadlier tools that could be used causing even more carnage.

See how well the Federal government handles mental health by seeing how they provide mental health services to the military and veterans.

Then there are others who use mental illness as an excuse for their disgusting crimes

It's happened so many times its sickening! People get away with murder just by pleading insanity!

Yes there are those who are actually mentally ill but then there are the opportunists...

I completely agree with you in the sense that we desperatly need to better help those who are mentally ill. We need to seriously address this issue, many people aren't well and this results in disastrous events. The whole system needs to reshape to accomadate and take seriously mental health.

However, along with that I also think something has to change in terms of gun laws. I'm not saying make them illegal because thta will never happen but that system must also change because obviously it is flawed, Adam Lanza and the shooters before him and the unstable people now shouldnt be able to hold a gun in their hands. and military grade weapons are not needed.

new gun laws and help for the mentally ill is needed.

I live in Newtown, so I guess I'm biased, but I hate Adam Lanza. I feel no sympathy and although he should have gotten help it doesn't change that something evil in him existed to created the chaos that he created on the fourteenth. My small town is forever scarred and will forever be grieving our children and heroes. Before we were so small that we werent even on the weather chanel. Now we are forever known for Adam's disgusting and horrific and shameful and just awful and evil crime.

While our mental health system needs serious attention that isn't the full answer.
It's a complex problem and needs a multi prong answer.
