Can A Positive Drug Test In The Er Show Up On The Bill?

Postby Wes » Wed Mar 15, 2017 10:40 am

I was taken to the emergency room for chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness. They run blood and urine samples and found THC in my blood, which is true because I have been smoking lately, but my symptoms were caused by high blood pressure and some asthma medications I took.

I'm away from home at college right now, so the hospital bill will go to my home address. Will the hospital bill show that I was tested positive for drug use? or will it just say that they ran tests and it cost a certain amount?

Could my medical insurance company find out about this test and that I use drugs? What will happen?

Please any help will be greatly appreciated.

OF COURSE YOUR MEDICAL INSURANCE COMPANY WILL FIND OUT!

When you go to the emergency room, the FIRST thing they do is print out a sheet of labels with your name on them, and they stick those labels on every piece of paper, test tube, test ordered, etc...and each procedure has a CODE NUMBER...and for the insurance company to PAY, each procedure must have a code.

Your bill to your parents may or may not be itemized to indicate your are a pot smoker...but your insurance company most likely already knows, because that stuff is filed electronically, usually later the same day--or certainly by the end of that same week!

Gracinda- Thank you!!! This is what I was asking. So the results won't be on the pill, but would the insurance company know about the results? Doctors didn't say anything about my use of weed except when they gave me a discharge paper, it said that they found illicit use of drugs. I know this happens commonly.

But I'm just wondering if the insurance company will ask me further about this drug test and that eventually my parents and everyone will find out because my parents pay for my insurance?
