They cannot refuse to treat you during an "emergency", such as if you just had a heart attack, stroke, or car accident, and went immediately to the hospital.

Once the emergency is over, they can refuse to treat you.

Cancer does not technically constitute an emergency, so they could refuse to treat you for cancer.

There are hospitals that will treat patients for free if you have no medical insurance. Even if you have a life threatening disease such as cancer. They will continue to treat you.

For the one that gave me a "thumbs down" is wrong! My neighbor had cancer was unemployed and had no insurance whatsoever. He went to Methodist Hospital here in Texas and was treated for FREE. He received chemo and stayed there when needed. So if you don't know what you are talking about don't answer.

With cancer? Yes. They're not required to provide FREE medical treatment for ongoing conditions. They ARE required to stabilize or transfer you, and provide care for IMMEDIATELY life threatening conditions - like a heart attack, or appendicitis.

And, of course, they can bill you for whatever care they give you.

They will treat you to get you stabilized in emergency but not regular continuing care.
