Postby rutledge » Tue Mar 06, 2012 5:59 am

I want to adopt this dog who i believe is a pit bull mix and i know that allstate doesn't accept pits in their home insurance but i was curious if anyone else knows of dog breeds that have the resemblance of a pit he is only about a foot tall so hes pretty small but he still has that face of a pit...someone told me that you can get a beware of dog sign that some insurance agencies let it go but if there is anyway that i could keep this dog ill do it...someone please help...

Yeah, that "beware of dog" sign is a bad idea - it's a red flag that YOU think your dog is potentially dangerous.

If I were you, I'd bring the dog to a vet for a checkup, and ask the VET what they think about the breed heritage, and get it in writing. If the vet can't determine, then "looks" don't matter.

The problem is that if/when this dog were to bite someone or cause harm, and if the insurance company would cover this, in most cases, the insurance company will force you to put the dog down, or otherwise deny the claim.

Putting a beware of dog sign does not absolve you from being negligent, since it is your duty to prevent harm to someone else. Pit bulls have a reputation, due to so many people out there using this breed to fight. But if you have ever watched the Dog Whisper, the main dog, "Daddy" was a pit bull and completely tame-less. I believed I read recently that Daddy died, of natural causes.

My suggestion is to find a dog that is considered tame, so you wont have to worry about it. But the key is, it is your responsibility to make sure that ANY dog that does not harm anyone else. And if you are considering a dog that you would have to put a sign up, beware of dog, then that dog is not for you.

good luck

Easy answer: Get another insurance carrier so you don't get screwed over at claim time and don't have to trouble yourself determining breed. NOT all companies have breed or weight restrictions.

Although you really want to think twice if you feel it's aggressive regardless of breed. I've had a client sued because her chihuahua bit someone and broke skin. Sad but true.

Try State Farm. Here in my state they have no breed or weight restrictions, of course it may vary by state. The only eligibility question here is whether or not your dog has bitten anyone, again, because regardless of breed, it can bite someone and result in a lawsuit. Just look around and you'll find companies without these restrictions you're worried about.

I agree with the second answer, see if the vet can determine what type of dog. Pitt bulls make great pets if they are treated properly by owners. Also, since you already have the insurance, they might just allow you to pay a little additional premium
